Not long ago, I was lucky enough to win a prize from that extraordinary company Bookhou, and it arrived in the mail last week. It’s difficult to express how I feel about Bookhou’s things, but the word that comes to mind is “humbled”. Their work is just so beautifully considered, constructed from such fine materials, hand made and finished with such care and packaged so beautifully, that I simply can’t imagine these things being even the least bit better than they are.
My prizes got immediately pressed into service. My old purse was summarily ditched, and this one filled with all my money… I mean cards. Now I have a delicious feeling of anticipation every time I need to pay for something, cos I get to take out my beautiful purse…
And the little Hare Handbag was immediately put to brilliant use, carrying my tapestry as well as the little screenprinted Bookhou Cahier onto the plane with me over the weekend. I’m sure I saw longing glances from my fellow travellers eery time I reached for another strand of wool from my handbag.
I always go through a stage of hating my tapestries, cos they take so long to make, but it’s usually worth persisting. I’m just having second thoughts about the blue background colour right now. It looks like the sky, which I think is a bit corny. I reckon I’ll unpick it and re-do in pale grey rather.
